Well the devil came and took me
Down a winding staircase
And I opened up the door
That stood beneath a fireplace
And the sun was beating down
And the trees swayed in the breeze
And the devil turned and said to me
“Here is everything you please”
“Here is everything you could want
Here is everything you need
We’ve girls in every bar
We’ll ignore all your misdeeds”
“You will be the king
Of everything you see
And everybody here
Will serve you happily”
For months I looked around
I searched until I fell
You were missing, you weren’t there
This truly was hell.
Cos it was somewhat backhanded
That time it got you reprimanded
What the fucking hell is that you’re wearing?
It looks like a babygrow
I suppose it’s easy to wipe off your dribble
From the corner of your mouth and your nose
Kicking off 2010 with a wallop, kinda like Jermaine Beckford shitting on the mancs, Johnny Arrow & The Cheap Day Returns fire their juicy melodies right in yer face (in a nice way) at the Oakford on Wed 13 Jan
It’s free
Also playing - Ed Lofstedt and Relik
Starts at 8.30pm I believe
We’ll be on about 10ish
Feels like we’re starting afresh at the moment. Si and I got together on Monday and I played him 5 new songs which I’d been working on. Thanks to him, we managed to work them into some kind of form, so that they at least make sense as standalone entities rather than just the crazy scribbling of a bored Beatles enthusiast. Current working titles are ‘My DNA’, British Aquarium’, ‘The End of the Summer’, ‘Relax’ and ‘World Without You’. I also have another couple which are not quite ready for human consumption yet, but should be very soon. I’m feeling like we’re about to hit the new year running, two shows coming up which should really give us a lift off.
We’re playing at the Cellar Bar in Bracknell on 15th December, which we haven’t played at for a very long time. It used to be our regular spot back in 2007 and we’re mighty excited to be able to head back there for our first show in over 6 weeks. Hopefully we’ll be able to debut some of the new songs and see how they sound in real life.
We’re following that up almost immediately on 17th December with a big gig at the Purple Turtle in Reading, which we’ve never ever played before. We’re on the bill with new mates The Circus Sands who blew me away a couple of weeks back at the Oakford. So no pressure there then
Going to be a great festive period

It’s been a great summer, and we’ve played a huge amount of shows (for us) over the last few months – just take a look at our Set List Archive and check out what and where we’ve played in our various guises throughout June, July and August.
But now Autumn is upon us and a new phase of Cheap Day Returning begins, with our new bassist, Alex Bowen.
We have, for a long time, been unable to keep a settled line-up and although it’s been fun hearing lots of people play our songs differently, it’s great to finally have some stability which should enable us to move on and up. Rehearsals are already sounding amazing and we can’t wait to unleash ourselves onto the willing public!
Which is precisely what we will be doing over the next few weeks, with 4 shows lined up between now and middle of October:
Friday 11 September – The Butler, Chatham Street, Reading
Sunday 27 September – Oakford Social Club, Reading – supporting The Wookies at their EP launch party
Friday 2 October – The Red Lion, Southampton Street, Reading
Thursday 15 October – The Cotton Club, Reading – supporting The Wookies once more, and arguably Reading’s most exciting band since, well, us – 60 Watt Bayonets
All in all, a great autumn and winter ahead
Much Love
Johnny
