Well the devil came and took me
Down a winding staircase
And I opened up the door
That stood beneath a fireplace
And the sun was beating down
And the trees swayed in the breeze
And the devil turned and said to me
“Here is everything you please”
“Here is everything you could want
Here is everything you need
We’ve girls in every bar
We’ll ignore all your misdeeds”
“You will be the king
Of...
Cos it was somewhat backhanded
That time it got you reprimanded
What the fucking hell is that you’re wearing?
It looks like a babygrow
I suppose it’s easy to wipe off your dribble
From the corner of your mouth and your nose

Feels like we’re starting afresh at the moment. Si and I got together on Monday and I played him 5 new songs which I’d been working on. Thanks to him, we managed to work them into some kind of form, so that they at least make sense as standalone entities rather than just the crazy scribbling of a bored Beatles enthusiast. Current working titles are ‘My DNA’, British Aquarium’, ‘The End of the...

Autumnal
It’s been a great summer, and we’ve played a huge amount of shows (for us) over the last few months – just take a look at our Set List Archive and check out what and where we’ve played in our various guises throughout June, July and August. But now Autumn is upon us and a new phase of Cheap Day Returning begins, with our new bassist, Alex Bowen. We have, for a long time, been unable to keep a...

We’ve been so busy this last month, I’m sorry we haven’t kept you up to date with goings on. In the last few weeks we’ve played at Déjà vu, Plug n Play (a great night with new friends The Wookies and Jets Against Giants – check them out, seriously good stuff) and a roaringly drunken slammer of a night at the Red Lion last Friday. Really has been stonking.
Tomorrow Simon and Johnny are playing on...

State of the Union
2009’s been a bit all over the place for the band so far – we started well in January with some amazing recording sessions with Al Heslop. To think that we managed to cram in what we did in three days is truly phenomenal, especially to the standard that we managed. In fact, all that was needed, other than the three days recording and mixing in January, was a day or so polishing off the mixes and...
Jennifer
Some people might not get this song. I think ‘Jennifer’ has a number of levels and a huge chunk of irony thrown in; the story of a date going seemingly well, and then at the end of the night, the girl cutting and running when the boy thinks he’s going to get some – after paying for everything all night.
You can either take it as a funny story of a guy getting screwed over by the girl, or you...
BBC BERKSHIRE - SUNDAY 8TH FEB - 7PM
DJ Linda Serck caught us at our last Bar Four gig a few weeks ago (the one where my voice was torn to shreds by ‘Easily Led’ - that god damn song…) and on Sunday is reviewing ‘Jennifer’ from our forthcoming EP on her ‘Session Panel’
Feel free to tune in - link is below - and listen up.

Yeah that’s a good shout. I didn’t include yellow submarine because I don’t know whether it counts as an album really – even though it’s got exclusive tracks on it like hey bulldog and northern song etc, it’s got all that soundtrack on the other side. But saying that, magical mystery tour was an EP in the 60s and strawberry fields, penny lane, baby you’re a rich man, hello goodbye and all you need...

Here I am going to have a go. I have decided, rightly to include the white album as a whole- however if I did just split it into discs, number 1 would be my favorite.
There is another caveat- aside from the fact I am loving let it be at the moment, the naked version is great!!!!!!! In fact I might put it above revolver, but I decided that was my current enamourment… however if I am not...
oh my god, I just spent the last ten minutes trying to rank The Beatles albums, but it’s just the hardest thing ever. And contradicting what I just posted before about Help! being in my top 5, it’s nowhere near. This is awful. This is where I am at the moment. I might stare at it for a bit longer and make some amendments
1. The Beatles (White Album)
2. Rubber Soul
3. Abbey Road
4. Revolver

negotiating the rain in the morning holding fingers that poke through the holes in her gloves cos when her hands aren’t held they cause so much trouble is this rain water under the bridge come back to haunt us taunt us again? or is it just tears blurring my vision?

drummers
So we’re looking for a drummer. A permanent one ideally – sim has decided that he’s better off concentrating on his other band, which is fair enough. He was only drafted in as a temporary replacement for Geoff anyhow, and I don’t think any of us (si, sim or myself) ever thought that the situation was going to be permanent. He let us know after the last show we played at bar four last wednesday –...

I still find strange That you’re entertained by me All alone even for a whole weekend We never struggle for conversation But I can’t grasp how you don’t see There’s nothing really to me at all
nighttime
I kiss her when she’s sleeping
Hair in my mouth
Dreaming of the sunshine from last year
But the winds still blows my window
Heading for the south
Memories of inadequacies and midnight fear
The lights are dimmer now
The streetlamps burning out
Shadows stalk the alleyways in town
Something from the distant past
Wakes me with a shout
Force the sleeping neighbour down
Don’t waste my time
unattended
Sat on the train, her pen dances with her thoughts
Like a butterfly round a sunflower
Set pieces and literary tricks and a big vocabulary
Words of steel like the Eiffel tower
And roman numerals carved
Like a long list of sums
Count the number of the chapters and the verses
As the acts meet one and other
And the blank page disappears
Careful not to open up the curses
She looks up at me fleetingly...
my little young friend
Where have you gone my little young friend
You used to chase footballs down to the end of our road
And ride your bike round the cul-de-sac all evening
While the sun played tetris with the horizon in orange
And reach under exhausts stretching for that size 4
Drink yourself sugar and not want anymore
Now you stare for hours at an unsmiling face
And follow the numbers with such little haste
And...
you break my heart everyday
you couldn’t know how I feel when you look at me like that
it’s like you’re taking a piece of my life and ripping it apart
i can’t see anything past you, it’s like your eyes are a brick wall
the most beautiful brick wall I’ve ever seen
you break my heart everyday
sometimes I daydream that you have crept in the back of my car
so I can drive you home
when I get to my front door I turn around to...
bar four, friar street, tonight
Playing tonight for the first time this year – always a pleasure playing at bar four for Daddy Pig, great promoter – treats us well, no bullshit, few laughs, cans of beer, the odd sage word of advice. He’s a good man.
He’s also putting on a show tomorrow night at Pitcher and Piano in Reading that needs no more publicity really, as the line up is just amazing – Tom Mansi and Icebreakers, Ben...
year starts
Hey guys
well the temperature in berks has gone up by a good degree, jenny’s back and lots of fun on the horizon – all plusses. The negatives are my phone was stolen on Friday night by some twat in Lloyds in Wokingham, I’m back at work, and with the extra degree of temperature has come the inevitable precipitation.
All is not lost though and I’m accentuating the positives – it’s the only mindset...
